      <image:title>Important Features</image:title>
      <image:caption>LARGER VIEW OF RAM AND SCREW Used fly presses are hard to find with high quality screws that aren't worn out. Many of the used machines don't have a steep enough pitch to the screw. This means that you must to have multiple revolutions of the fly wheel. These presses are designed from the ground up for forging. Note, the screw only requires a bump on the handle that hangs down from the fly wheel. For bigger jobs try a full revolution. You might need a full revolution for hot bending a 2" X 4" piece of bar stock on some of the smaller machines. This is a four lead screw and the fly wheel on top sits on an octagonal screw for positioning the handle to the most comfortable and productive position.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Precise Tooling Control page 2 - Vertical Depth Control</image:title>
      <image:caption>The "Check Nut" is the Vertical or Depth Index that allows you to control the depth the tool penetrates into the metal you are working on. It can be a chisel, fuller, stamp, texture pattern stamp touch mark etc. The Quick Change Tool Holder is easily made from a piece of 1" X 3" bar stock that covers the flat area of the ram. It has a 3/4" stub welded on to it that fits into the ram tool hole and is held there by the set screw. The tool holder goes into the ram and it has a 5/8" deep hole that holds any kind of tool that you can design (chisels, fullers, side sets, cutting hardy, texturing or stamping tools, embossing tools, the list goes on and on) and it has a set screw in it to hold the tool in place. I had some S7 in 5/8 ", so that is why I chose this size. The ram hole is 3/4" and you can put tooling in that also. Important: An integral tool holder for quick change of tools is much better than one with a welded on stub that goes into the tool hole. If you go with a welded stub make sure you have a good weld all the way around. I would also use a thicker piece of steel than a 1". I'd go with at least 2".     </image:caption>

      <image:title>Precise Control of Tooling page 3 - Horizontal Control</image:title>
      <image:caption>Horizontal Control: Horizontal control is achieved with an easily fabricated fence that allows precise control of the position of the tool end in relation to the work piece. Below is a quick and dirty jpeg drawing that I made up until I can get over to the shop and take a photo of the fence. It only takes a slight bump of the handle that hangs down from the fly wheel to get the tool to do it's work. No jumping around, chasing pieces of bouncing steel. Just a an easy bump and your tool sinks into the hot or cold steel. I'm amazed by the power of this set up on cold steel. A chisel I made out of S7 steel easily sinks into cold steel with just a bump on the handle and then it rebounds back to you.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/58e42261ebbd1a24417ce1d7/1497030909387-7YI7HP07UUYSR7JVHIB9/image-asset.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Precise Control of Tooling page 3</image:title>
      <image:caption>Photo of the fabricated fence I use to control the horizontal indexing of my workpiece. You can use the fence that moves in or out to control the position of you tooling relative to your workpiece as seen in the photo below or you can flip it so that the fence is facing 180 degrees to it's current position. This allows a better view of the workpiece, because the fence is not in the way. The base plate of the fence is a piece of 1" thick x 6" wide and 22" long. I used two pieces of 1" square stock that are tapped for a set screw and welded to the side of the base plate and drilled two 3/8" holes that allows the round rod to move in or out for precise positioning of the piece you are working on.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Proper Use</image:title>
      <image:caption>Full Face Hammer Strikes Hammer straight down or at an angle (Figure 1). Usually used for changing the cross section or spreading steel out with the cross peen.       </image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/58e42261ebbd1a24417ce1d7/1497209885698-57Q427Z3U1PCXZ4BXBRK/image-asset.gif</image:loc>
      <image:title>Proper Use</image:title>
      <image:caption>Half Face Strikes This means the hammer face center is aligned half on and half off the edge of the anvil This works great for forging shoulders. Using the near edge vs the far edge of the anvil will give you completely different effects. Try it, if this is new information for you. Figure 2 demonstrates drawing out on the far edge of the anvil. Figure 3 demonstrates drawing out on near edge of anvil.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/58e42261ebbd1a24417ce1d7/1497209847652-QUWSKSQDMSB4VTQZXU8G/image-asset.gif</image:loc>
      <image:title>Proper Use</image:title>
      <image:caption>Edge Hammer Strikes This will also produce a shoulder. An edge hammer strike means that the near or far edge of your hammer's edge is aligned with the near or far edge of the anvil. Figure 4 demonstrates an edge hammer strike. While Figure 5 shows the stock at the opposite side of the anvil at far edge.       </image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/58e42261ebbd1a24417ce1d7/1497209752737-MOCRTTRZF0PCHFPRIYZ9/image-asset.gif</image:loc>
      <image:title>Proper Use</image:title>
      <image:caption>Tapering or Pointing the End of a Bar of Hot Steel When tapering or pointing the end of a piece of hot steel it is best to let the point you are drawing out rest on the far edge of the anvil. Figure 6 below, demonstrates this technique. This allows you to avoid hitting your anvil face with the edge of your hammer. Just place the hot steel on the far edge and tilt the hammer and the steel at the same angle as you want the hot steel to be and continue to feed the steel over the edge as you change its' cross section. Don't forget to flip it 90 degrees every 2-3 hits, so you steel is worked evenly on two sides. This works for making a round, square or octagonal point.</image:caption>
